surface winds Flashcards
1
Q
what is global circulation of winds caused by?
A
heating at the equator and cooling at the poles
2
Q
what would happen without wind transporting heat energy?
A
the equator would continually get hotter and the poles continually colder
3
Q
what does cold air do?
A
sinks and increases surface air pressure, forming high pressure
4
Q
what does hot air do?
A
rises and decreases surfaces air pressure, forming low pressure
5
Q
why does wind form?
A
air flows from high pressure to low pressure
however due to the spin of the earth the Coriolis effect deflects winds to the right into the Northern Hemisphere
