Supervolcanoes Flashcards
What is a Caldera?
A large volcanic crater, often has a lake in it, its typically one formed by a major eruption leading to the collapse of the mouth of a volcano.
Where is the magma stored?
Magma Chamber.
How does a super volcano form?
Magma rises through a pipe within the mantle and a build up of magma creates a magma chamber, this causes a bulge onto the lower crust. Then it suddenly bursts open with all the build up of pressure being released. Then a Caldera is formed.
What is a super volcano?
A volcano that is much bigger than your standard volcanoes. They only develop in a few places across earth - at destructive margins. The characteristics are: flat, cover a large area and have a caldera.
Name an area where you can find a super volcano.
