Superior and Inferior mesenteric arteries Flashcards
Superior mesenteric artery supplies…

Pancreas function
- Produces exocrine secretions (digestive)
- Produces endocrine secretions (hormones)

Pancreas and duodenum blood supply

Pancreas and duodenum venous drainage

Jejunum differentiating features
- Tall plicae circulares
- Few, wide arcades (blood supply)
- Long vasa recta
- Larger diameter
Ileum differentiating features
- Few plicae circulares
- Many, small arcades
- Short vasa recta
- Peyer’s patches

Loss of blood supply to bowel causes:
Ischemic bowel (due to thrombosis or volvulus)
Large intestine function
- Absorption of water, vitamins
- Storage, compaction of wastes

Large intestine blood supply (to proximal transverse colon)

Large intestine SMV drainage

Specialized lymphatics in villi of small intestine
Lacteals
Midgut sympathetic innervation
Sympathetic trunk to thoracic splanchnic nerve to superior mesenteric ganglion (synapse) then to organs
Midgut parasympathetic innervation
Vagus nerve to superior mesenteric ganglion to organ
Function of midgut parasympathetic and sympathetic
Parasympathetic:
• Increases intestinal motility and secretion
Sympathetic:
- Decreases intestinal motility and secretion
- Vasoconstrictor
Large intestine IMA supply

Large intestine IMV drainage
