Development -- Genital Flashcards
Genital system develops from
Urogenital ridge (Intermediate mesoderm):
- Lateral: Reproductive duct
- Medial: Genital, gonadal ridge
Timeline of genital system (broad)
Male & female morphological features do not develop until week 7
Weeks 12-14 = recognizable features of external genitalia
Week 20 = phenotypic differentiation is complete
When and where do the indifferent gonads appear
During 5th week at genital/gonadal ridge
SRY gene encodes for
testes determining factor (TDF)
Testis cords forms
Rete testes and tubuli recti
Testis cords contain
Primordian germ cells
Sustenacular (sertoli) cells: Secrete mullerian inhibiting factor (MIF)/ anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH)
Mullerian inhibiting factor function
Suppresses the development of paramesonephric ducts
Mesoderm between testis cords:
Interstitial (leydig) cells
Leydig cell function
Secrete testosterone
Function of 5a reductase
Converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT)
•DHT required for male external genitalia differentiation
Fibrous band extending from caudal pole of testes to scrotum
Gubernaculum
Peritoneal diverticulum that penetrates abdominal wall in inguinal region
Processus vaginalis (testes pull it down, testes posterior)
Adult remnant of processus vaginalis
Tunica Vaginalis
Cryptochordism
Undecended testes
In ovary development, Primitive sex cords are replaced by
cortical cords
