Summer Exam Cheat Sheet Flashcards
Learn small definitions in Glaciation and Rivers chapter.
The location of manufacturing industries is influenced by many factors including:
• Raw Materials
• Labour Markets
• Transport
• Capital
• Services
• Government Policies
Explain how any three of the factors listed above influence the location of one manufacturing industry that you have studied.
Apple Computers Ltd, Cork
Raw materials: Access to the required raw materials is available through national and international transport routes.
Labour: Local schools, colleges and training programmes provide all types of labour needed for the facility. Cork also has many highly skilled workers.
EU and government policy: Low corporation tax, international trading policy and favourable business conditions for MNCs attracted Apple to this location.
Study different types of climate: Hot, cold and temperate
.
Explain what Relief rain is with the aid of a diagram.
Relief rain occurs in areas where rain clouds are forced to move up and over mountains. Water evaporates from the sea to form rain clouds. These clouds are carried towards the coast by wind fronts. As the temperature falls, the clouds condense and release rain. The side of the mountain that experiences higher precipitation levels is referred to as the windward side, whereas the sheltered, dryer side is called the leeward side.

Explain the coastal processes with the aid of a diagram.
1. Hydraulic action is when the force of the waves erode the coast as they crash against it. The higher the wave frequency, the more erosion takes place.
2. Abrasion is when eroded material in waves crashes against the coastline. This increases the damage caused by waves breaking against the coast.
3. Attrition is when the sea’s load hits and collides against itself due to ocean currents. This causes the load to be broken down into smaller pieces. Larger pieces become smoother and more rounded as they wear each other down during transport.
4. Solution is when some of the sea’s load is dissolved by the water. For example, limestone rocks dissolve during transport in seawater.
5. Compressed air is created when waves crash against the joints and cracks in the coastline. This puts the rock of the coastline under great pressure. When the wave moves back out to sea the pressure returns to normal. This repeated process weakens the rock along the coastline and causes it to break away.
