Energy And The Enviroment Flashcards
What are 3 impacts of quarrying?
Environmental impact : noise and dust pollution.
Economic impact : more money in local economy.
Social impact : rock climbing and abseiling.
What are 3 advantages of oil?
It produces great heat, it is very efficient, and is easily transported.
What are 3 disadvantages of oil?
It is expensive, we have to import it, and oil leaks can cause serious pollution.
Where is a lot of the worlds oil found?
A lot of the worlds oil is found in the Persian Gulf.
What are the requirements for Hydroelectric Power (HEP)
- Water supply - HEP stations need a constant supply of water.
- Slope - A HEP station needs to be built where there is a drop in the course of the river.
- Bedrock - The reservoir behind the dam of a HEP station must be built on impermeable bedrock
- Climate - HEP stations need to be situated in areas with high levels of rainfall.
What are 2 advantages of HEP?
HEP stations and turbines can generate cheap, clean and renewable electricity, and the building of the dam can also prevent flooding.
What are 2 disadvantages of HEP?
New roads have to be built around the reservoir and HEP stations, and the dam can stop fish from swimming upstream. This reduces fish stocks.
Explain 2 Advantages of wind energy?
Clean energy source that is sustainable, and cuts cost of energy as it reduces our need to import energy sources.
Explain 2 disadvantages of wind energy.
Wind is unreliable from day to day, and wind farms are very expensive to build.
Explain 2 solution to acid rain?
Use more renewable and clean energy sources such as solar and wind power, and use natural gas instead of coal in power stations to reduce sulfur dioxide emissions.
