Secondary Economic Activities Flashcards
What are factories?
Factories are where products are made. Raw materials are converted to semi finished products or finished products.
List and explain 4 factors when building a factory.
Government policy - areas with low corporation tax are good.
Labour - there should be a skilled work force in the area.
Transport Facilities - The factory needs to be close to good transport links.
Services - There should be electricity, wifi, running water etc.
Explain what the light industry is.
Light industry involves using raw materials that are small and light. Raw materials in light industry are mostly cheap. E.g. Apple
Explain what the heavy industry is.
Heavy industry involves using raw material that are large and heavy. The raw material are usually expensive. E.g. Honda
Give 1 reason why factories cause pollution?
Oxide gases rise into the sky from factories. The gases can be harmful to humans, animals and crops. E.g. In Beijing, China there is so much air pollution from factories that masks need to be worn or else the air can be quite harmful for your health.
How does acid rain happen?
Acid rain happens when gases from factories are released into the air. The gases mix with the clouds and rain falls as acid rain.
What problems does acid rain cause? And what can we do to stop it?
Acid rain wipes out fish stocks in seas, rivers and lakes. Acid rain is harmful to plants and damages soil and trees. And It can damage old buildings by wearing away the rock.
To stop it we can use more renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power and use natural gas instead of coal in power stations because it is a cleaner fuel.
What does someone who works in the secondary sector do?
Someone who works in the secondary sector makes things. Like a factory worker, or a carpenter.
Explain any manufacturing industry that you have studied
Aughinish Alumina is a factory that makes Alumina. Alumina is a semi-finished product. It is a white powder used to make aluminium. Ireland does not make aluminium, so the alumina is exported by ship to the UK and Scandinavia to be smelted. It is located on the Shannon Estuary near Limerick City. The Aughinish Alumina plant is the largest of its kind in Europe. Production started in 1983 and now produces over 1.8 million tons of alumina per year. And almost has 500 employees.
