Not all welcomed it and there was tensions between modernists and conservatives

They became well known for cabaret in which nudity featured strongly

Many of the comedies attacked politicians and authoritarian attitudes

Expressionism

It felt that their works should express meaning or emotion rather than physical reality
What did expressionism also influence?
it influenced German literature
What did novelists and poets adopt?
A free form of writing in which they focused on a character’s internal mental state rather than on the external social reality
What type of movement was seen through architecture?
the Bauhaus movement
What did the Bauhaus school encourage?
Students were encouraged to break down the barriers between art and technology by incorporating new materials such as steel, concrete glass into their designs
What was much of experimental theatre in Weimar Germany about?
It was explicity political, attacking capitalism, nationalism and war
