Bactrim/Septra = TMP/SMX = Trimethoprim Sulfamethoxazole
What coverage do sulfonamides have and what are 6 organisms that they cover for specifically? (PNTLIS)
Coverage: Gram + and most Gram - but not Pseudomonas
Unusual Coverage: Pneumocystis jiroveci, Nocardia, Toxoplasmosis, Listeria, Isospora, Stenotrophomonas
What are sulfonamides typically used as treatment for?
skin/soft tissue infections due to MRSA coverage
What are 6 possible side-effects of sulfonamide use?
- hypersensitivity
- rash
- dose-dependent bone marrow suppression
- elevated creatinine
- hyperkalemia
- GI side effects
What would be seen if a patient with G6PD Deficiency took sulfonamides?
Hemolysis and methemoglobinemia
