the goal
aka the end…what’s hoped to achieve
3 potential goals:
- winning

lusory and prelusory goals
a specific achievable state of affairs
aka the prelusory goal: can exist independent of the game

a goal that only exists w/in the context of the game
the means
the way to achieve the end
lusory means: actions in game that help achieve the prelusory goal i.e. use feet to kick ball
illusory means: methods not allowed i.e. shooting opponent
to WIN, can ONLY use lusory means
- cheating is not winning, even if the prelusory goal is met
- prelusory goal is NOT the lusory goal
rules
constitutive rules: define what’s allowed in the game, says what means players can use to reach the prelusory goal
rules of skill: how to play WELL, strategic techniques w/in the constitutive rules
penalty rules: penalties for breaking rules
constitutive rules MAKE the game…prohibit the most efficient means to reach the prelusory goal
- make game challenging, inc tension
- obstacles allow skill dev
lusory attitude
w/o this, impossible to play a game
adopt a game-playing attitude where you follow the constitutive rules
- the element that unifies other game elements
- MAKES a game
we forbid efficient means not because of consequences, but bcs the rules forbid it
- creating obstacles is essential to games
2 potential game definitions
- attempt to achieve goal/specific state of affairs (prelusory goal) using means permitted by the rules (lusory means), where rules prohibit more efficient means in favour of less efficient ones (cosntitutive rules) and where rules are accepted bcs they make the activity possible (lusory attitude)
- a voluntary attempt to overcome an unnecessary obstacle
suits on sports and games

elements of sports are similar to elements of games
a game is a sport if
- it is a game of skill (not luck i.e. candyland, slots)
- the skill is physical
- the game has a wide following
- the wide following is stable
suits on seriousness

- serious if the goal is
work ethic vs leisure ethic
work ethic: play, games, and sport are LOWER than work
leisure ethic: work is below sport, games, and games
it’s silly to work hard so you can play vs it’s silly to play so you can work hard
