Succinylcholine Flashcards
Succinylcholine- class
Depolarizing neuromuscular blocker, paralyzing agent
Succinylcholine - MOA
Bind to the receptors of acetylcholine at neuromuscular junction to cause skeletal muscle paralysis.
Succinylcholine - Indications
Endotracheal intubation, to terminate laryngospasm and to promote muscle relaxation.
Succinylcholine - Contraindications
Acute narrow angle glaucoma, penetrating eye injuries, inability to control airway or support ventilations, penetrating eye injury, burns or crush greater than 24 hours old, muscle wasting disease, malignant hyperthermia, hyperkalemia.
succinylcholine - adverse reactions
apnea, malignant hyperthermia, arrhythmias, bradycardia, hypertension, hypotension, cardiac arrest, hyperkalemia, increased intraocular pressure, increased intracranial pressure, fasciculations.
succinylcholine - drug interactions
Effects potentiated by oxytocin, beta blockers, and organophosphates. Diazepam may reduce duration of action.
Succinylcholine - dosage and administration
Adult: 1-1.5 mg/kg IV, IO rapid
Ped: 1-1.5 mg/kg IV/IO rapid
succinylcholine - duration of action
Onset: 1 min
Peak: 1-3 mins
Duration: 5 minutes
Succinylcholine - Special considerations
If the patient is conscious, explain side effects prior to administration. Premedication with lidocaine may blunt any increase in intracranial pressure during intubation.
succinylcholine- pregnancy category
C
Succinylcholine - how supplied
