etomidate- MOA
Short acting CNS depressant at the reticular activation system to produce anesthesia.
Etomidate- indications
Anesthesia for intubation, cardioversion or transcutaneous pacing
Etomidate- Contraindications
Hypersensitivity; marked hypotension, severe asthma, severe cardiovascular disease, adrenal suppression (septic shock), labor and delivery.
Etomidate- Adverse reactions
Myoclonic skeletal muscle movement, apnea, hyperventilation, laryngospasm, nausea/vomiting, hypotension- due to decreased adrenal output lowering cathecolamine release
Etomidate- Drug interactions
Alcohol and other CNS depressant medications may increase CNS depressant effects
Etomidate- Dosage and administration
Adult: 0.3 mg/kg IV/IO over 15- 30 secs, decrease to 0.2 mg/kg for patients over 70 or patients with liver failure.
Ped: 0.3 mg/kg IV/IO over 15- 30 secs
Etomidate- Duration of action
Onset; 15- 45 secs
Duration; 3-12 minutes
Etomidate- Special considerations
Does not have any analgesic properties. Use an analgesic for painful procedures
