Ipratropium Bromide- class
Anticholinergic, bronchodilator
Ipratropium Bromide- MOA
Inhibits acetylcholine at bronchial smooth muscle receptors causing smooth muscle relaxation and bronchodilation. Decreases bronchial secretions.
Ipratropium Bromide- Indications
Asthma, COPD
Ipratropium Bromide-Contraindications
Hypersensitivity, allergy to atropine or peanuts.
Ipratropium Bromide- Adverse reactions
Palpitations, dizziness, anxiety, headache, nervousness, dry mouth, nausea and vomiting.
Ipratropium Bromide- dosage and administration
Adult: 500 mcg via small volume nebulizer (administered with a beta agonist), May repeat in 20 minutes up to three doses
Ped: 350 - 500 mcg (Rest is same as adult)
Ipratropium Bromide- Duration of action
Onset: 15 mins
Peak effects: 1 hour
Duration: 4-6 hours
Ipratropium Bromide- special considerations
Give in conjunction with a beta agonist, not the primary treatment for bronchospasms
