What are substances?
legal or illegal drugs that can alter a person’s mood, perception or brain functioning
What are substance related disorders?
a problematic pattern of use leading the clinically significant impairment (within 12 months)
What are non-substance one related disorder?
Ex: gambling disorder
What is substance intoxication?
set of behavioral and psychological changes that occur as a result of the effects of the substance
What is the effect of alcohol on low doses?
increased self-confidence and relaxation, euphoria, decreased inhibitions
What is the effect of high doses of alcohol?
depression, decreased motivation, sleep disturbances, confusion
What is tolerance?
experiencing diminished effects from the same dose of a substance (need more and more of a substance to achieve intoxication)
What is substance withdrawl?
set of physiological and behavioral symptoms that result from discontinuation after a prolonged period of heavy use
What is the difference between use, misuse and abuse?
Use: consuming a substance
Misuse: using a substance contrary to its intended purpose
Abuse: harmful or hazardous use of a substance
What are the symptoms of stage 1 alcohol with drawl?
-weakness
-sweating
-anxiety
-headache, nausea, abdominal cramps
What are the symptoms of stage 2 alcohol with drawl?
(Begins 2nd or third day)
convulsive seizures
What are the symptoms of stage 3 alcohol with drawl?
-tremens: auditory, visual and tactile hallucinations
-sleep disturbance
-fever
-sweating
-irregular heartbeat
How can death occur from alcohol withdrawal?
hyperthermia
What are the long-term effects of alcohol misuse?
-low grade hypertension
-increased risk of cancer
-malnourishment
-brain development, young adults
-dementia

intoxication and withdrawal are similar to alcohol
What are benzodiazepines and barbiturates supposed to be for?
sold by prescription as sedatives for treating anxiety and insomnia

increase euphoria or decreases agitation caused by other substances
How does too much screentime effect a person?
Increased: obesity and depressive symptoms
Decreases: energy intake

How can chronic use impact biological factors?
