What are the five different types of eating disorders?

What is the diagnostic criteria for Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder?
based on the sensory characteristics of food, concern with getting sick, or lack of interest in eating
-significant weight loss and interference of psychosocial functioning
What is the diagnostic criteria for anorexia nervosa?
restriction of energy intake
-intense fear of gaining weight or becoming fat
-disturbance in the way in which one’s body weight or shape looks
What are the two subtypes of anorexia?
restricting type: the individual has not engaged in recurrent or purging behaviours
Binge-eating/purging type
What is disordered eating?
person does not meet criteria for an eating disorder
-displays problematic eating patterns
What is the diagnostic criteria for Bulimia Nervosa?
recurrent episodes of binge eating
-recurrent in appropriate compensatory behaviors in order to prevent weight gain (vomiting, laxatives)
-binge and purge occur on average once a week for 3 months
What is binge eating?
-eating, within a 2 hour period an amount of food that is larger than what most individuals would eat
-lack of control over eating
What is the diagnostic criteria for binge eating disorder?
-similar to bulimia but less purging
What are the five symptoms of binge-eating episodes?
- eating much more rapidly than normal
- eating until feeling uncomfortably full
- eating large amounts of food when not feeling physically hungry
- eating alone

What are psychological factors for eating disorders?
-self-esteem, perfectionism, anxiety, and trauma
What are the cultural and societal influences?
-cultural norms
-media portrayal
-societal pressures around body image
What is the time frame for healing from an eating disorder?
5 years
What is the crude mortality rate for anorexia nervosa?
5% per decade
When does nutritional counselling usually come in?
later in recovery, want to reduce need for control so this would be unhelpful early in recovery
