What are Barbiturates
depressant or sedative drugs that are used for medical uses, anxiety, tension, etc. But are highly addictive
Who are Barbiturates mostly commonly used by
Middle aged people who first used the sedatives to combat anxiety or insomnia but then got addicted
Because Barbiturates are highly addictive, what two drugs were commonly prescribed instead
Minor tranquillizers: Valium and Librium
How long do the effects of barbiturates last and what makes the effects of if more powerful
Lasts 6 hours, and more powerful when combined with alcohol (4x the effects)
How long does withdrawal from Barbiturates take
2-3 or 3-4 weeks
What are Narcotics
drugs that are used for pain relief and treating insomnia (highly addictive)
What are Opiates
A type of Narcotic drug that comes from the opium poppy. It provides feelings of euphoria and relief from pain.
Why are opiates a popular street drug
because they produce a rush of pleasure and gets rid of the awareness of personal problems
What is a biological reason to why opiates are SO addictive
Because they are very similar to our natural chemical “endorphins” and fits into out receptor cites easily (like a key in a lock) because it is impersonating endorphins
What are Stimulants
substances that increase activity in the nervous system by increasing the availability of norepinephrene and dopamine (feelings of euphoria and self confidence)
What a re Amphetamines
A type of stimulant that gives euphoric rushes
eg.methamphetamine
It also mimics episodes of schizophrenia
What is Amphetamine Psychosis
psychotic state from using amphetamines (tweaking)
