STUDY GUIDE MOD #2 Flashcards
WHAT IS THE EQUIPMENT NEEDED TO SUCTION A PATIENT?
SUCTION SOURCE, COLLECTION CONTAINER, TUBING SUCTION TIPS OR CATHETERS AND STERILE WATER.
WHAT ARE THE STEPS TO SUCTION A PATIENT?
TURN THE UNIT ON, ATTACH A CATHETER, TEST FOR SUCTION, TURN THE PATIENTS HEAD OR ENTIRE BODY TO THE SIDE. OPEN AND CLEAR THE PATIENTS MOUTH. PLACE THE SIDE OF THE TIP AGAINST THE ROOF OF THE MOUTH AND INSERT THE HE BASE OF THE TONGUE. APPLY SUCTION WITH THE TIP IN PLACE AND SUCTION ON WITHDRAWAL FOR NO MORE THAN 10 SECONDS IN A CIRCULAR MOTION
HOW DO YOU PROPERLY INSERT AN OROPHARYNGEAL AIRWAY?
ENSURE THE OPA IS THE CORRECT SIZE BY MAKING SURE IT EXTENDS FROM THE CORNER OF THE MOUTH TO THE TIP OF THE EARLOBE. USE THE CROSSED FINGER TECHNIQUE TO OPEN THE PATIENTS AIRWAY. INSERT THE AIRWAY WITH THE TIP POINTING TO THE ROOF OF THE MOUTH. ROTATE 180 DEGREES INTO POSITION. THE FLANGE WILL REST ON THE PATIENTS MOUTH. THE PATIENT IS NOW READY FOR VENTILATION.
HOW DO YOU PROPERLY INSERT AN NASOPHARYNGEAL AIRWAY?
MEASURE THE NPA FROM THE NOSTRIL TO THE TIP OF THE EARLOBE. APPLY LUBRICANT. INSERT PUSH THE TIP OF THE NOSE UPWARD AND INSERT THE AIRWAY WITH THE BEVELED SIDE TOWARD THE SEPTUM. ADVANCE THE AIRWAY UNTIL THE FLANGE RESTS AGAINST THE NOSTRIL. NEVER ADVANCE THE AIRWAY IF YOU FEEL RESISTANCE. YOU CAN TRY THE OTHER NOSTRIL.
PROPER STEPS FOR USING A BAG VALVE MASK.
OPEN THE AIRWAY AND INSERT PROPERLY SIZED ORAL OR NASAL AIRWAY. POSITION YOUR THUMB OVER THE TOP OF THE MASK WITH INDEX FINGER OVER THE BOTTOM OF THE MASK. PLACE THE MASK OVER THE PATIENTS FACE. BRING THE JAW UP TO THE MASK. CONNECT THE BAG TO THE MASK . SQUEEZE THE MASK UNTIL THE CHEST RISES. IF THE CHEST DOES NOT RISE AND FALL, REEVALUATE THE HEAD POSITION AND MASK SEAL.
OPTIMAL WAY TO ACHIEVE A GOOD SEAL WHEN VENTILATING A PATIENT WITH A BAG VALVE MASK?
BY USING TWO RESCUERS WHICH WILL ALLOW TWO HANDS TO MAINTAIN A GOOD MASK SEAL.
WHAT ARE THE PROPER SETTINGS FOR A NON-REBREATHER MASK?
12-15 LITERS PER MINUTE WILL ALLOW FOR 80-90% OXYGEN CONCENTRATION.
WHAT ARE THE PROPER SETTING FOR A NASAL CANULA?
1-6 LITERS PER MINUTE. 24 TO 44% OXYGEN CONCENTRATION.
WHAT ARE THE PROPER SETTINGS FOR A BAG VALVE MASK?
OXYGEN SET AT 15 LITERS PER MINUTE. VENTILATION SHOULD LAST ABOUT ONE SECOND AND BE PROVIDED EVERY FIVE SECONDS FOR A TARGET RATE OF 10 VENTILATIONS PER MINUTE. YOU CAN ACHIEVE UP TO 100% OXYGEN DELIVERY.
SIGNS OF INADEQUATE BREATHING?
CHEST MOVEMENT ABSENT OR UNEVEN, NO AIR CAN BE FELT OR HEARD AT THE NOSE OR MOUTH. BREATHE SOUNDS DIMINISHED OR ABSENT. NOISES SUCH AS WHEEZING, SNORING, GURGLING, GASPING CAN BE HEARD. RATE OF BREATHING IS TO FAST OR TO SLOW. BREATHING CAN BE SHALLOW, DEEP OR LABORED. LIPS, SKIN, TONGUE, EARL LOBES OR NAIL BEDS ARE BLUE OR GREY. PATIENT MAY BE UNABLE TO SPEAK. LOW OXYGEN SATURATION READING LESS THAN 95%.
