AN ACTIVE PROCESS IN WHICH THE INTERCOSTAL RIBS MUSCLES AND THE DIAPHRAGM CONTRACT, EXPANDING THE SIZE OF THE CHEST CAVITY AND CAUSING AIR TO FLOW INTO THE LUNGS.
