Structures Of The Head Flashcards
What do the Palatoglossal arches do?
Laterally connect tongue to soft palate
What composes the Nasopharynx?
Choanae to the palatopharyngeal arches at the caudal border of the soft palate
What do the Palatopharyngeal arches do?
Laterally connects soft palate to Nasopharynx
Where is the Laryngopharynx?
Dorsal to the larynx, from the palatopharyngeal arches to the beginning of the esophagus
What is the beginning of the esophagus called?
Pharyngoesophageal limen
What is the purpose of the trachea, and what happens during swallowing?
Purpose: protect trachea against food aspiration, and aid in breathing and phonation
During swallowing, the larynx comes forward, epiglottis is deflected caudally, glottis closes, inspiration is inhibited
What are the four cartilaginous structures of the larynx?
Epiglottis
Thyroid
Arytenoid
Cricoid
Muscles of the larynx and their functions
Cricothyroideus:tenses vocal fold (phonation)
Cricoarytenoideus dorsalis: opens the glottis
Cricoarytenoideus lateralis: closes glottis
Thyroarytenoideus: relaxes vocal fold, constricts glottis
What is the Glottis?
The “doorframe”
Vocal folds + vocal processes of the arytenoid cartilages
What is the Rima Glottidis?
The opening into the larynx
What is the function of the Hyoid Apparatus?
What are the bones that make it up?
Supports the tongue and acts as attachments for lingual muscles, supports the larynx
Stylohyoid Epihyoid Thyrohyoid Ceratohyoid Basihyoid
What composes the Oropharynx?
Palate glossary arches to the caudal border of the soft palate and base of epiglottis
