Structures of the Brain Flashcards
explain frontal lobe
controls decisions and movement
explain brocas area and where its located
bottom frontal lobe, speech production
explain primary motor cortex
in frontal lobe by parietal lobe, shaped in a collumn, controls voluntary movement
explain primary sensory cortex
in the parietal lobe by the frontal lobe, arranged in a column, controls senses
Explain wernickes area and where its located
speech comprehension, located on the right middle of the temporal lobe
Cerebrum
Controls conscious thought, memory, sensory processing, and voluntary actions.
Cerebellum
Coordinates voluntary movements, balance, and posture
Brainstem
Regulates basic bodily functions such as breathing, heart rate, and digestion. It also serves as a pathway for sensory and motor signals to and from the brain.
Hippocampus
Plays a crucial role in the formation and retrieval of memories, particularly spatial memories.
Amygdala
Involved in processing emotions, particularly fear and pleasure responses, and in the formation of emotional memories.
Thalamus
Acts as a relay station for sensory information, regulating consciousness, sleep, and alertness.
Hypothalamus
Regulates body temperature, hunger, thirst, and other autonomic functions. It also controls the release of hormones from the pituitary gland.
Basal ganglia
Coordinates voluntary movements and plays a role in habit formation and procedural learning.
Prefrontal Cortex
Responsible for decision-making, planning, impulse control, and personality expression.
