Structure of the plant Flashcards
Root functions
Anchoring
- Water and mineral absorption
- Food storage
Types of root
Taproot
Fibrous roots
Adventitous root
Zone of protection
The root cap protects the root cells as they push through the soil.
Zone of Cell production
- Meristem tissue allows plants to grow.
- Apical meristems are found in the root and shoot tips.
- Cells in the root meristem are constantly dividing by mitosis to produce new cells.
Zone of elongation
- When new cells are formed, they are very small.
- Hormones (auxins) cause cells to grow longer.
Stem
- They are the site of leaf attachment
- Can be herbaceous (soft) or woody.
Stem function
-Support
- Transport
- Photosynthesis
- Storage
Apical Bud
A potential growth point that may develop into a shoot, leaf, or flower.
Axillary Bud
Located between the leaf and stem
Lenticles
Openings on stems for gas exchange.
Leaves functions
- Make food
- Exchange gases
- Store food
- Allow water loss from plants
Sessile
Leaves attached straight to the stem
Stomata
Found on the underside of leaves
Venation
The pattern of veins on a leaf
Types of tissue
Dermal- the epidermis, protects the plant
Ground- the packing tissue found between the dermis and vascular tissue
Vascular- the xylem and phloem.
