Structure of the lungs Flashcards
Where is the trachea located?
Above superasternal notch. Starts at C6, ends at T4/5 at carina
What alters tracheal diameter
Trachealis muscle
Why are foreign objects more likely to enter the right lung?
Because of its size and shape, since the right main bronchus is slightly more vertical, shorter and wider than left
State how many lobes each lung has.
The left lung has two lobes, while the right has three lobes.
What supplies oxygenated blood to the bronchi?
Bronchial arteries
What is each lung identified as in terms of lobes?
Left has 2 secondary lobar bronchi
Right has 3 secondary lobar bronchi
What does each lobar bronchus divides into?
Segmental bronchi
What does bronchi divides into?
Bronchioles, which are conducting, terminal and respiratory then decreasing all the way to finally become alveoli
State the characterization of the histology of trachea
Pseudostratified, ciliated, columnar epithelium with goblet cells for mucous secretions (1L a day)
State the characterization of the histology of bronchi
Pseudostratified, ciliated, columnar epithelium - flat
Why is the bronchi flatter compared to the trachea?
Because C-shaped cartilage rings are replaced by cartilage plates
State the characterization of the histology of bronchiole
Ciliated columnar epithelium - very flat
