Structure of the heart Flashcards
What is the heart?
A muscular organ that pumps blood through the circulatory system by rhythmic contraction and dilation
What do the ventricles form?
The ventricles form the two main chambers of the heart.
What does a ventricle carry?
It carries de-oxygenated blood to the heart.
What is a ventricle?
A hollow part in an organ (AKA a cavity)
What is the vena cava?
It is a large vein that carries deoxygenated blood to the heart.
How many of the vena cava are there in a human and what are there names?
There are two in a human and they are called the superior and inferior
What is the aorta?
It is the main artery that supplies oxygenated blood to the circulatory system
Where is the aorta?
It is found passing out of the left ventricle and runs down the backbone.
What is the pulmonary artery?
The artery that carries blood from the right ventricle to the lungs for deoxygenation.
What is the bicuspid valve?
The valve between the left atrium and left ventricle of he heart which have lower tapered cusps.
What is the tricuspid valve?
A valve that seperates the right atrium from the right ventricle and prevents the blood flowing backwards during the contraction of the ventricles
What are coronary arteries?
Arteries that supply blood to the heart
What are semi-lunar valves?
A pair of valves
Where are semi-lunar valves found?
They are found at the bases of the aorta and pulmonary artery
What do semi-lunar valves have that prevent the backflow of blood to the heart?
Three cusps or flaps
