Components of the nerve systems Flashcards
What are nerves?
specialised cells that transmit messages from one part of the body to another.
What are the components of the central nervous system?
Brain and Spinal Cord
What does the spinal cord connect the brain to?
Every part of the body by nerve cells
What is the spinal cord made up of?
A bundle of nerve fibres and tissue
What protects the spinal cord?
Specialised bones called the vertebrae
What do vertebrae have that fibres run through?
A hollow centre
What does the peripheral nervous system consist of?
Any other nerves that are outside of the CNS
Where does the peripheral nervous system relay information to and from?
Relays information from the brain and the spinal cord to the rest of the body.
What is the autonomic system?
A system that you don’t consciously control.
It occurs naturally
What sort of things does the autonomic system control and regulate.
Heart rate and gut movement AKA peristalsis
What does sensory mean?
sensation or physical senses
What do senses do?
Transmit information to the brain
What does motor relate to?
Movement or physical activity
What do motor neurons transmit?
Information from the brain to the muscles which results in movement
What is the somatic nervous system?
A system that consists of the motor and sensory nerve pathways which work together both voluntarily and involuntarily.
