Structure of hip joint Flashcards
Type of joint
Synovial multiaxial ball and socket joint
Articular surfaces
Pelvis acetabulum and head of femur
Surfaces are reciprocally curved but not fully congruent
Joint capsule
Strong, reinforced by ligaments
Ligaments
Intracapsular- ligament of head of femur
Extracapsular- iliofemoral, pubofemoral, ischiofemoral
Arterial supply
Medial and lateral circumflex femoral arteries
Deep femoral artery
Nerve supply
Sciatic, femoral and obturator nerves
Iliofemoral ligament
AIIS to intertrochanteric line of femur
Prevents hyperextension
Strongest ligament
Pubofemoral ligament
Superior pubic rami to intertrochanteric line of femur
Prevent excessive abduction and extension
Ischiofemoral ligament
Body of ischium to greater trochanter
Prevents hyperextension and holds femoral head in the acetabulum
