Structure of GH joint Flashcards
Type of joint
Synovial ball and socket
Location
Between humerus and scapula
Degrees of freedom
Three
Glenoid labrum
Arises from the margins of the acetabulum to provide depth to the socket
Joint capsule
Attaches from the labrum and inserts towards anatomical neck of the humerus which provides some stability
Ligaments
Superior, middle and inferior glenohumeral ligaments stabilise shoulder and prevent anterior dislocation
Coracoacromial and coracohumeral ligaments limit superior displacement of humeral head
Function of rotator cuff muscles
Provide dynamic stability to the joint, keep the ball in the socket and rotate the humerus
Supraspinatus abducts, Infraspinatus and teres minor laterally rotate and subscapularis medially rotates
