Structure of elbow joint Flashcards
Type of joint
Compound synovial joint
Articulating bones
Humerus
Radius
Ulna
Humero-radial articulation
Between head of radius and capitulum
Humero-ulnar articulation
Between trochlear and trochlear notch of ulna
Joint capsule
Fibrous membrane covering synovial membrane to enclose the joint
Attachments of joint capsule
Margins of epicondyles
Neck of radius
Olecranon
Coronoid process of ulna
Radial collateral ligament
Proximally attaches to lateral epicondyle
Distally attaches to annular ligament
Ulnar collateral ligament
Proximally attaches to medial epicondyle
Distally attaches to medial aspect of olecranon
Annular ligament
Encircles head of radius and hugs it to radial notch of ulna.
Quadrate ligament
Limits spin of radial head
Limits supination and pronation
Interosseous membrane
Between radius and ulna
Transmits force from the hand
Area for muscle attachment
Arterial supply
From cubital anastomosis
Branches from brachial and deep brachial arteries
Nerve supply
Median, musculocutaneous and radial anteriorly
Ulnar posteriorly.
Bursae
Intratendinous bursa- located in tendon of biceps brachii
Subtendinous bursa- between olecranon and tendon of triceps brachii
Subcutaneous bursa- between olecranon and overlying connective tissue
