OA Flashcards
1
Q
Pathophysiology of OA
A
We have hyaline cartilage covering the ends of each bone, which provides a smooth surface for joint movement and acts as a cushion.
In OA, the cartilage breaks down- therefore causing pain, swelling, stiffness etc
2
Q
OA pattern
A
Morning stiffness 1 hour Pain on WB Pain decreases with rest Age Insidious onset Limited ROM Swelling
3
Q
Risk factors
A
Age, female, obesity, muscle weakness etc
4
Q
OA on x ray
A
Osteophytes
Deformity of bone endings
Narrowing Joint space
5
Q
OA and strengthening
A
Strengthen muscles around the joint to take the stress off the joint
6
Q
OA and physical activity/other advice
A
Low impact activities such as walking and swimming
Heat or ice application
