Structure Of Brain Flashcards
What is hippocampus?
Forebrain structure of temporal lobe; includes hippocampus proper (Ammons horn), dentate gyrus and subiculum
What is included limbic system?
Anterior thalamic nuclei, amygdala, hippocampus, limbic cortex, parts of hypothalamus, interconnecting fibre bundles
What is primary auditory cortex?
Region of superior temporal lobe whose primary input is from auditory system
What is primary somatosensory cortex?
Region of anterior parietal lobe whose primary input is from somatosensory system
Where are somatosensory memories stored?
In circuits of neurons in the sensory association cortex (v close to somatosensory cortex). Regions closes to sensory areas receive only info from that sense; those further away integrate senses (eg look of face with sound of voice)
What does damage to auditory association cortex result in?
Difficulty perceiving speech and sometimes making meaninful speech
What does damage to visual association cortex result in?
Difficulty recognising objects
What does damage to somatosensory association cortex result in?
Difficulty perceiving objects that can be touched but not seen
What is the corpus callosum?
Large bundle of axons that interconnect corresponding regions of association cortex across brain
What is the fornix?
Fiber bundle that connects hippocampus w other parts of brain (inc mammillary bodies)
What is thalamus?
Part of diencephalon; contains nuclei that project and receive info from cerebral cortex
What is a projection fiber?
An axon of a neuron from one region whose terminals make synapses with a neuron from another region
Where does lateral geniculate nucleus receive and project info?
From the retina, to the primary visual cortex (fibers)
Where does medial geniculate nucleus receive info from and send info to?
From auditory system, to primary auditory cortex (fibers)
Where does ventrolateral nucleus send and receive info?
Receives input from cerebellum, sends axons to primary motor cortex
