Structure and Transport in Flowering Plants Flashcards
name the main parts of a flowering plant and where they are found.
Root system (bottom of plant in the ground), Root (in root system), Shoot (top of plant above ground), Stem (thin structure that others grow out of) Leaf (grows out of stalk), Flower (grows out of stalk).
what is the function of a flower?
reproduction
what does a flower contain?
It contains male and female sex organs
what does a flower make?
seeds
what is a flower?
a structure in which plant sexual reproduction occurs
what is a flowering plant?
the most advanced type of plants with specific type of structure containing flowers (roots, stems, leaves and flowers)
what is the function of the leaf?
Makes food for the plant (photosynthesis)
•Cools the plant when water vapour passes through it
•Allows the exchange of carbon dioxide and oxygen
•Leaf stores food (e.g. lettuce, cabbage, cress, spinach)
what is a leaf?
An organ of photosynthesis and transpiration in higher plants
What is fruit?
A reproductive body of a seed plant
what is the function of fruit?
Protects seeds
•Provides food for seeds
what is the function of the bud?
Allows new leaves and flowers to grow
what is a bud?
A swelling on a plant stem consisting of overlapping immature leaves or petals
what is a stem
a long slender structure that supports a plant
what is the function of a stem
The stem allows the transport of food, water and minerals around the plant
•It also supports the plant and holds it upright
•Stems store food (e.g. potato)
what are roots
the part of the plant located underground that anchors and supports it
what is the function of roots
Anchor and support
•Take in water and nutrients
•Store food (e.g. carrots and turnips)
what transports stuff around a plant
vessels - the xylem and the phloem
what is transpiration
Transpiration is the loss of water vapour from the stomata of the leaves.
what are stomata
The stomata are little holes on the underside of the leaves.
what is the transpiration stream?
The flow of water from the roots, up through the plant, and out the leaves is called the transpiration stream.
name the vessels in a plant
the xylem and the phloem.
how does water travel through a plant?
Water is absorbed up through the roots, and travels to the leaves and the tips of the plant through the xylem.
what is the function of the phloem
Food from the leaves travels to other parts of the plant in the phloem.
what is the function of the xylem
Minerals from the soil are dissolved in the water, and both travel to other parts of the plant in the xylem
