STRUCTURAL SPANS Flashcards
1
Q
Match the structurals systems with the spans:
* 2 way slab
* Steel beams
* Wood beams
* Waffle slab
* Steel open web joists
A
2
Q
What are benefits of a wood beam structure?
A
- light weight construction
- used for residential and light commercial work (most economical for this type of construction)
- Easy to work with
3
Q
What are benefits of steel beams?
A
- good support on heavy structures
- vesatile, easily constructed for tall structures
- supports cladding and curtainwalls
- Most economical for spans of 20ft-40ft
4
Q
What are the benefits of steel open web joist?
A
- Good for large structures
- able to naturally run MEP through the webs
- similar to steel beams, but ised when spans exceed 40ft or where there ae more concentrated loads
5
Q
What are benifits of Two Way Slabs
A
- consisten but flexible column placement
- greater spans than oneway slab
- good for large residential and hotels
6
Q
What is are the differences between a two way slab and a one way slab?
A
- Two way slabs are easier to construct and can span further than one way slabs
- one way slabs need to be supported on each side
- The span of a two way slab is larger
7
Q
What structural systems allow openings at exterior walls?
A
Rigid Frame
8
Q
What structural system allows the least openings on exterior walls?
A
- Shear Walls
- Ideally these are located in areas where windows and doors are not required example movie theater
9
Q
What are structual systems that are lateral force-resisting?
A
Shear wall - out of the three the stiffest and heaviest option
Brace Frame system
Moment (Rigid frame system)
