Concrete Flashcards
AB: Why would you fill a hollow CMU
Grout: easy-flowing cementitious material poured into a CMU wall
- used for compressive strength
- horizontal rebar and vertical rebar added for tensile strength
- used for load bearing walls (including those that resist seismic)

What is a better insulator hollow CMU or grout filled CMU?
Hollow CMU blocks are better insulators than grout filled
But weaker than grout filled reinforced block
What is Vermiculate - filled CMU?
Vermiculite - is a loose granular mineral poured into the cavities for increased thermal resistance
-in older construction may contain asbestos
What is perlite?
Perkite is used to pour into CMU walls for increased thermal resistance
- slightly better than vermiculite
Polystyrene bead insulation
-syrofoam beads poured into the top of CMU block
Injection foam filled
increases thermal resistance
can be inject from either the inside or outside and doesnt need to be poured at top of wall if not accessible
TYPE I Portland Cement
General Purpose
preferred for typical application
no unique needs exist
TYPE II Portland cement
Generates less heat and cures slower, good option for warm weather
