Disruption of blood supply to the brain. It is acute and involves focal neurological symptoms and signs.
2 types of stroke?
1) haemorrhagic - bleeding occurs around the brain tissue.
2) Ischaemic- clot blocks blood flow to an area. This is more common
Risk factors for stroke?
Same as most CVD.
Note hypertension is a massive risk factor.
Atrial Fibrillation increases risk of cardioembolism
Prior history of TIA can increase chances.
Most likely to have a stroke just after having one.
How can the type of stroke be determined?
brain imaging- CT the scan of choice
Haemorrhagic stroke is reversible or non-reversible
non reversible
Ischaemic strokes you can do thrombolysis up to _____ from onset of symptoms and thrombectomy up to _____ from symptom onset
4.5
6
Medical management to avoid new stroke?
Antiplatelets
Statins to reduce cholesterol (can make haemorrhagic stroke worse)
Antihypertensives
Lifestyle advice
AF needs anticoagulants (Rivaroban and Apixaban)
