Stroke 2 Flashcards
How can the brain show injury? (3 ways)
Loss of consciousness
Seizures
Localized loss of function
Regarding vision, what changes might a patient have to their vision when having a stroke? (2)
1) Sudden vision loss/difficulty
2) Sudden onset on visual field, EOM, and other sensory defects
What percent of a humans brain is devoted to vision?
30-50%
What is the left side of the brain responsible for? (6)
1) Sensory stimulus for right side of the body
2) Motor control for right side fo the body
3) Speech, language, and comprehension
4) Analysis and calculations
5) Time and sequencing
6) Recognition of words, letters, and numbers
What is the right hemisphere of the brain responsible for? (6)
1) Sensory stimulus for the left side of the body
2) Motor control for the left side of the body
3) Creativity
4) Spatial ability
5) Context/ perception
6) Recognition of faces, patterns, and objects
If you see a person and suspect them having a stroke on their left hemisphere, what may that person be experiencing? (8)
Aphasia/dysarthria (can’t speak/communicate)
Right-sided hemiparesis (paralysis of right side of body)
Right-sided sensory loss
Right-sided visual field defect
Right-sided neglect
Poor right conjugate gaze
Difficulty reading, writing, or calculating
Poor analysis & sequencing
If you see a person and suspect them having a stroke on their right hemisphere, what may that person be experiencing? (8)
Dysarthria possible
Left hemiparesis (left side paralysis)
Left-sided sensory loss
Left-sided visual field defect
Left-sided neglect
Poor left conjugate gaze
Spatial disorientation
Poor recognition of familiar locations, people, etc.
What things would you have a patient do to test if they’ve had a stroke? If they fail this test, how likely is it that they have had a stroke?
1) Have the patient say “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks”
2) Have the patient smile (facial droop)
3) Have the patient close their eyes and hold their arms out. (arm drift)
If any of these are abnormal, there is a 72 percent chance the patient had a stroke.
To check a stroke, check these signs FAST. what does FAST stand for?
Face
Arm
Speech
Time
A person who has experienced a stroke may have reduced speech. What is the term for this?
Dysarthria
A person who has experienced a stroke on the left side of their brain may be unable to comprehend or express language. What is the term for this?
Aphasia
