Stretching Flashcards
1
Q
Treatment Options for Soft Tissue
A
- Passive and active stretching
- PROM
- Positioning/splinting
- Massage - SSTM
- Heat
- Hydrotherapy
2
Q
What is stretching?
A
The process of elongating connective tissues, muscles and other connective tissues.
3
Q
Why stretch?
A
- Prevents MSK injuries
- ROM is limited due to soft tissue restriction
- Prevention of contracture
- Muscle weakness and shortening of opposing tissue
4
Q
An effective stretch needs…
A
PLASTIC changes not elastic changes - neuroplasticity.
Plasticity - soft tissue assumes a greater length after the stretch has been removed.
Elasticity - soft tissue returns to its original length after the stretch has been removed.

Q
Muscle Spindle
A
- Located in the muscle belly (the contractile part)
- Sensitive to change in LENGTH (load) and change in RATE (speed)
- When it senses a quick lengthening it sets off two reflexes - STRETCH REFLEX (length then contract) and RECIPROCAL INHIBITION (relaxes the antagonist)
6
Q
Golgi Tendon Organ
A
- Lives in the TENDON
- Measures tension
- Autogenic inhibition - when the GTO senses a lot of tension and inhibits the muscle-tendon unit
