Brain Lobes Flashcards
1
Q
Frontal Lobe
A
- Motor Cortex - planning and execution (damage = apraxia)
- Speech - Broca’s Area (production of speech)
- Personality/emotion
- Memory
2
Q
Parietal Lobe
A
- Sensory cortex: origin, shape, pressure, texture
- Body/spatial awareness
3
Q
Temporal Lobe
A
- Auditory cortex
- Wernicke’s area - understanding whether a sound is speech, music or noise
- Memory
4
Q
Occipital Lobe
A
- Visual cortex
- Interprets visual input
5
Q
Brainstem
A
- Comprised of pons, medulla oblongata and midbrain (important control centres for cardio, resps etc)
- Connects brain to spinal cord and peripheral system
- Sensory and motor pathways
- Contains cranial nerves
6
Q
Cerebellum
A
- Produces smooth, co-ordinated movement and balance
- Proprioceptive information
7
Q
What’s in the diencephalon?
A
Thalamus (relay station)
Hypothalamus (important for homeostasis - endocrine gland)
Corpus collosum (connects the two hemispheres) Pineal gland (melatonin) Anterior and posterior pituitary gland (important for homeostasis)
8
Q
Thalamus
A
Relay station for sensory and motor pathways and information
9
Q
Hypothalamus
A
Major endocrine gland, important for homeostasis
10
Q
What’s in the lymbic system?
A
All play an important role in emotions and memory
Cingulate gyrus (important role in emotions) Hippocampus (important for short term memory and learning) Amygdala (important role in emotions and memory - including past trauma)
Fornix (connects to hippocampus)
11
Q
Hippocampus
A
Important for short term memory and learning
