Stretching Flashcards
What is the purpose of stretching?
It improves flexibility and range of motion about your joints. Therefore improved flexibility may improve your performance in physical activities. It may decrease risk of injuries.
What is static stretching?
Elongation of muscle with application of low force and long duration (usually 30 seconds). Static stretching has a relaxation, elongation affect on muscle, improving range of motion.
What is dynamic stretching?
It involves the performance of a controlled movement through the available ROM. It involves progressively increasing the ROM, The stretch is repetitive and progressive and can be sue for sports rehab
What are the indications for stretching?
ROM is limited as soft tissues have lost their extensibility as the result of adhesions, contractures and scar tissue formation.
Restricted motion may lead to structural deformities.
Used as a warm up and cool down exercise to reduce muscle soreness
What are the contraindications for stretching?
Bony block on end of range
Unstable/recent fracture
Acute soft tissue injury
Infection/haematology in tissues
