Perception of the inability to cope with the demands of a situation. Can be positive or negative
Stressors
Environmental changes that can induce a stress response. Generally arises when there is an imbalance between demands of a task and an individuals perception of their ability to meet the demand

The physiological changes that occur as a result of stress

Causes of stress in sport
Fear of failure or poor peformance, Knowing there is an audience, Age and experience level in sport
Effect on performance
Already think they are gonna lose, thus go in with poor attitude, thus no will to win. (Fear of failure) Focuses on audience, thoughts of not being good enough. (Audience)
Cognitive stress management techniques
Positive self-talk, Negative thought-stopping, Goal setting, mental rehearsal, rational thinking, imagery, mindfulness
Somatic stress management techniques
Progressive Muscular Relaxation, Bio feedback, Relaxation, Centering, Breath control
