Levels of Processing Model Flashcards
Purpose
Explains what we do with info rather than how it is stored. Opposes view that there are set memory stores.
Structural
Paying attention to what the words look like, shallow level of processing, Demonstrate a wide leg stance on a sort board.
Phonetic
Involves processing the sounds of words, Tell them to do a wide leg stance
Semantic
Considers actual meaning of the words, deepest level of processing, Why is the wide leg stance important
Application to Physical Activity
Meaningfulness - If athlete is able to give the action meaning, they will have more chance of committing it to their LTM.
Mental Imagery - The athlete could use this to imagine them performing a movement before playing, will help the rehearse the movement
Using Associations - Athlete should associate the movement with sounds, feelings and as many other senses as they can.
Eval (+)
Explains that the longer we consider info the more we remember it, Simplifies memory process to help us understand it.
Eval (-)
Individual difference - some people can remember something well despite not giving it a lot of attention
Difficulty in defining what deep processing actually involves - no criteria
