What is Leadership?
An individual having influence over the behaviour of others to motivate them to follow set goals
What makes leadership effective?
Good communication
Being good as the sport
Clear goal or vision
Shows empathy
Different types of leaders
Emergent - Comes from group, normally due to performance levels and connections to teammates
Prescribed - Appointed from outside the group due to their managerial abilities e.g. Southgate
Emergent Leader + and -
+ Team cohesion improves, Knows the player and team dynamics.
- May lack objectivity and have their own friendships which could effect their judgements
Prescribed Leader + and -
+ They will have required abilities, Will be more objective
- Not aware of the team culture, which may delay effective decision making, Takes time to build trust
Different Types of Leadership Styles
Autocratic, Democratic, Laissez-Faire
Autocratic
Task orientated, dictatorial in style, make all decisions. Used when situation is dangerous and/or there is time constraints.
Democratic
Person oriented and involves group in the task. Shares decisions with others, works slower than autocratic. Used when more time is available and Situation isn’t dangerous.
Laissez-faire
Leaders take a back seat and don’t add input or feedback, decisions are governed by team, focus on problem solving
Is used when with high level performers, leader can fully trust member capabilities
Autocratic Disadvantages
Stifles Creativity, Perceived as controlling
Democratic Disadvantages
Time Consuming, can lead to teammates being unsure of roles
Laisez-Faire disadvantages
Low productivity, Lack of organisation
Theories of Leadership
Trait theory, Social Learning Theory, Interactionist Theory, Contingency Approach
Trait Theory
Leaders are born, not made. Traits are stable and enduring. Can lead any size team, in ant sport, at any level because born as a leader.
Social Learning Theory
Leadership characteristics can be learned from others. Behaviours of role models and significant others are watched and copied - vicarious learning. However, individual differences exist
