Attribution =
Perceived cause of a particular outcome. E.g. Blaming the weather for losing the game.
What is attribution linked to?
Linked to motivation as our attributions will directly affect our future efforts and performance.
What are the dimensions in Weimers Model of Attribution?
Stability - Whether the attribution can change or not.
Locus of Causality - Whether the athlete is able to influence the outcome
Locus of control - Whether attributions are under the control of the performer, others or uncontrollable
What are the 4 reasons in Weimers model?
Ability - Stable and internal, uncontrollable
Effort - Unstable and internal, controllable
Difficulty - Stable and external, uncontrollable
Luck - Unstable and external, uncontrollable
Self Serving bias =
When sports performers who lose attribute their failure to external causes and their success to internal causes. This protects their self esteem and motivation. However problem with this is you’ll never improve
Learned helplessness =
The belief that failure is inevitable AKA the why bother attitude. Performer has the feeling of hopelessness and a belief they’ll never succeed. Influenced by past experiences
Two types of learned helplessness =
Specific = Belief in inevitable failure when performing a specific task
Global = A belief in inevitable failure when perform
Mastery Orientation
A view that an athlete is motivated by the desire to become an expert or to improve their own ability and actions to the best they can be, rather than focusing on outperforming others.
Attribution retraining
A method that can be used to ensure that athletes attribute their failures to more favourable factors which can have a positive impact on their actions.
