What was the method?
A sequence of events that a child is in a unfamiliar room w/ mother, stranger enters,mother leaves:The child is classified. 100 middle class white Americans.
What was the aim?
To investigate how attachments might vary between children.
Insecure avoidant?
Not secure exploration of the environment,
indifferent when caregiver leaves
Securely attached
Explores environment freely, upset when caregiver leaves but could be consoled.
Insecure resistant
Exceptionally clingy; deep fear of strangers, cannot be consoled
What did Ainsworth measure?
Separation anxiety, Stranger anxiety, Reunion behaviour and Exploration behaviour
Findings?
70% of children were securely attached, 15% insecurely resistant, and 15 % insecurely avoident.
