approaches Flashcards
Biological approach explaining OCD
an approach that emphasizes the importance of physical processes in the body such as genes and neural functions
Candidate genes
Candidate genes are genes which help/influence and develop things such as OCD, for example, one gene called the 5HTI-D beta improves the efficiency of serotonin being transmitted through synapses.
OCD is polygenic
Studies show that OCD is seen to be polygenic, which means that there are several genes which cause OCD and not one singular gene. e.g. dopamine, serotonin and neural transmitters all contribute to the role in regulating mood.
Different types of OCD
One group of genes may cause OCD in one individual, but that doesn’t mean the same set of genes may cause OCD in a different person; there are different sets of genes in different people which contribute to the role of OCD; these genes are known as being heterogeneous.
