Agentic state and Legitimacy of authority Flashcards
Agency
Acting in certain ways for someone else because you believe that they have a full power
Autonomy
Feeling independent and having free views with no one having any power over your views/acts.
Agentic shift
The shift from being in autonomy and then feeling powered by someone who is in more power and is in a higher position in the social hierarchy.
Binding factors
The feeling that everything is right and shifting the responsibility on participants rather than the psychologist
Legitimacy of authority
Knowing that the authority we are under is actually socially accepted and needed and its legitimate.
Destructive authority
When legitimacy of authority goes too far and is used for destructive purposes, such as milgram experimenter using prods to make participants to behave in certain way.
What are the three evaluation points
Research support- students shown a film of milgrams study, all the students identified the legitimacy of authority as they blamed the harm on the experimenter rather than the participant, strength because it supports the research.
Cultural differences- Milgrams procedure in Australia found that only 18% of participants went all the way to the top of the voltage scale, but in Germany 85% went all the way. Strength because it is useful for all accounts of cultures.
Real life crimes- legitimacy authority can help explain how obedience can lead to real life war crimes; My Lai massacre can be understood by terms of power hierarchy of US army.
