1
Q

What is the abdomen?

A
  • The body cavity between the diaphragm and the pelvic inlet
  • It is separated from the thorax but not the pelvis
  • It is a multi-layered musculoaponeurotic wall

Q

What are the 4 areas if the stomach?

16
Q

What is the name of the sphincter between the stomach and the duodenum?

A

The pyloric sphincter

17
Q

what are the different layers of the stomach?

A

in the stomach as well as the inner circular layer and outer longitudinal layer of muscle there is an additional layer - so 3 layers of muscle in total
- The additional layer is called the oblique layer

18
Q

What is the function of the additional layer of muscle in the stomach (the oblique layer)?

A

To make sure there is churning in the stomach

19
Q

What are the functions of the stomach?

A
  • Stores swallowed food
  • ‘Retention’ of food
  • Mixing of gastric ‘juice’
  • Chemical and mechanical functions
  • Limited absorption except alcohol
20
Q

Where are mucous secreting cells located in the stomach and what do they secrete?

A
  • Luminal surface and gastric pits

- Alkaline secretions which protect stomach acid from damaging the rest of the body if leakage of gastric ‘juices’

21
Q

What do parietal cells secrete?

A
  • HCl

- Intrinsic factor (need for vitamin B12 absorption)

22
Q

What do chief cells secrete?

A
  • Pepsinogen (inactive form): converted into pepsin by HCl for protein digestion
23
Q

What do endocrine cells secrete in the stomach?

A

Gastrin - Hormones that increase contractions of later part of the GIT

24
Q

What is the blood supply of the stomach?

A
  • The greater curvature of the stomach receives its blood supply from the left gastroepiploic artery along its top edge and from the right gastroepiploic along its lower edge
  • The upper portion of the greater curvature of the stomach, along with the fundus, receives blood from the short gastric artery
  • The lesser curvature of the stomach receives blood from the left gastric artery (this also supplies the cardia region) and the right gastric artery
25
Q

What is the venous drainage of the stomach?

A
  • R and L gastric arteries –> portal vein
  • Short gastric veins and L gastroepiploic –> splenic –> superior mesenteric
  • R gastroepiploic –> superior mesenteric
26
Q

What are oesophageal varices?

A
  • If pressure in the liver is increased it backflows through the veins in the stomach and into the oesophagus
  • If these veins balloon they burst, due to increased portal pressure
27
Q

What is the name for increased portal pressure?

A

Portal hypertension

28
Q

What is gastric by-pass surgery - Roux-en-Y?

A

An anastomosis of the distal divided end of the small bowel to another organ such as the stomach, pancreas or oesophagus. The proximal end is anastomosed t the small bowel below the anastomosis

29
Q

Why do you need to re-connect the duodenum after gastric bypass surgery?

A

Because of bile and pancreatic secretions
