  • Readily and commonly available sizes and shapes of timber

  • Length of Timber can be cut into decorative shapes
  • Lots of shapes available for various different purposes, such as skirting boards or decorative edging
  • Saves time but can be relatively expensive

  • Have a variety of uses, from model making to furniture construction
  • Main purpose is to strengthen joints or can be used to join pieces of wood together with a dowel joint
  • Requires accurate drilling of holes

  • Manufactured boards come in standards size sheets in a range of thicknesses.
  • Smooth surface and greater stability than natural timber
  • Available in extremely large sizes, but large sheets are more difficult to cut and may splinter
