Reinforcement/Stiffening Techniques Flashcards
What shape is useful but not very strong and why?
- A square or rectangle is a useful shape to make things from, but it is not very strong.
- The corners can twist and the square easily turns into a diamond shape, due to collapsing under force.
How can the rectangle be strengthened?
By adding a diagonal strut to prevent collapse
What are fabrication processes?
Processes used to make the parts for something
What are Assembly processes?
Processes used to put the parts together
What are examples of fabrication and assembly processes?
The use of wood joints, nails, screws, and adhesives can all add strength to a wooden structures.
Define lamination
Bonding several laminates (thin layers) together to make a thicker materials
Why is lamination used?
To be able bend timber
What is the advantages of lamination?
-Greatly increase the strength of the material, for example wooden beams such as Glulam.
What is a brace?
A brace is used across a framework to prevent the structure from bowing inwards. This adds strengths.
What is a tie bar?
A tie bar is used across a framework to prevent the structure from distorting outwards. This adds strengths.
What is a composite materials?
Made of different materials bonded together.
What two materials can be embedded within a laminated wooden structure to add strength?
- Glass reinforced plastic (GRP)
- Carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP)
- Natural fibres
