Why do Catholics believe in stewardship?

A

•God told Adam to “till and keep the garden” in Genesis so we must therefore till and care for the earth as God has gifted it to humans
•In Ladauto Si it says “we have taken more than our fair share” suggesting that humans must use the planet’s resources fairly as stewards to preserve it for future generations
•”let us make mankind in our image” God has given humans the intelligence to be stewards of the earth

Q

why do humanists believe we should be stewards?

A

•they accept science and science tells us that we are destroying the planet e.g. deforestation is is reducing the amount of trees that can absorb carbon in the atmosphere and there is research that tells us we are contributing to to the acceleration of global warming
•Peter Singer would state that the way we treat animals is unfair and is part of “speciesism”. As animals are becoming extinct we must treat them better as they are part of the planet and Peter Singer would see them as “persons” as they can feel and have relationships
