What is CAFOD?
CAFOD( Catholic agency for overseas development)is the official charity organisation of the Catholic Church in England and Wales. It is part of Caritas international who are the charity organisation for the whole of the Catholic Church.
What is the central aim of CAFOD?
to make everyone self reliant, a saying frequently used by members is “give a man a fish and he has a meal, teach him to fish and he can feed himself for life”
What do CAFOD do?
•provide emergency aid in places where natural disaster and conflict have destroyed lives
•supporting people through long term aid such as healthcare, education and clean water supplies
•they challenge national policies and laws that damage the lives of the poor e.g. regarding climate change or inequality
what does the Catholic Church teach about the preferential option for the poor?
•Catholics have a duty to work against the forces in society that create poverty
•This duty comes before many acts of Christian love and service a Catholic may perform because the Church asks Catholics to put the poorest and most vulnerable first (preferential option for the poor)
What did Jesus say about serving the poor?
•”feed the hungry, care for the sick, welcome the stranger”
•”whatever you do for the least of my brothers and sister you do for me”
what is SVP?
SVP (St Vincent de Paul society) is s charity inspired by St Vincent de Paul founded in 1833.
what is the aim of SVP?
their aim is to tackle poverty and bring social justice to everyone by providing practical assistance to those who are suffering
how does SVP carry out Jesus’ message of “love thy neighbour “
•visiting and befriending individuals and families at home, in hospital or hospices, residential homes and young offender institutes. The aim of the visits is to show they care and ensure that people who are vulnerable don’t feel lonely and isolated. Visitors may also help with practical tasks such as shopping, gardening or filling out official forms.
•Organising soup runs in disadvantaged areas, providing warm drinks, food and companionship.
• Contributing to protecting the environment by encouraging people to donate pieces of furniture, instead of throwing them away, so they can be repaired and recycled and redistributed to those who need them.
how does SVP respect human dignity?
• A founding principle of the society is that they respect the dignity of each person they work with because they believe that they are all equal as everyone has been made in the image of God.
• the SVP is a Catholic and non-discriminatory organisation helping those in need regardless of their colour, race, faith, status or sexual orientation. The kind of people they help includes; the homeless, single parent families, the socially
