The belief that human’s are made in the image of God and reflect his personhood. Unlike other animals people are rational,free and moral
why do Catholics believe imago dei?
•they believe that human life is scared as God specifically made humans in his image as the endpoint of creation: “so let us make mankind in our image”
What did St Catherine of Sienna teach about imago dei?
she wrote:
* the soul knows of her own indignity” this means since humans have God’s truth in our lives, they have an inner conscience that tells them when their actions are right and wrong just like looking in a mirror
*”for by love you created her” meaning that the reason humans have been made in the image of God is because he loves them and created them out of love.
How might a Catholic’s belief in imago dei impact them?
•they would accept everyone regardless of gender,race etc. as we are all made in the image of God and he has given humans a special dignity which should be recognised regardless
•they would reject procedures like abortion as they would see it as taking a life that God has created
